Diffusion



Diffusion refers to the process by which molecules intermingle as a result of their kinetic energy of random motion.

  • Can take place in gases, liquid and solids
  • Fastest in gases because the gas particles are moving at high speeds
  • Since the particles in liquids are moving much more slowly than those in a gas, diffusion is slower in liquids than in gas.
  • Diffusion of a substance is the movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration until an even distribution is achieved.

 

Factors that affect the speed of diffusion:

  • Temperature – The higher the temperature, the faster the diffusion. WHY? Because at high temperature, the particles are more energetic and moves at higher speeds.
  • Mass of particle – Lighter particles have a higher rate of diffusion than heavier particles at any given temperature.

 

Examples Of Diffusion

  • The scent of the perfume spreading across the room.
